If you’re a PC gamer, you’ve probably already used the Epic Games launcher, if only for the free games. If so, you know how frustrating it can be. Slow, limited features, endless downloads… But did you know there’s an alternative? The Heroic launcher is an open-source launcher that allows you to manage your Epic Games without having to use the official launcher.
This launcher is particularly popular among Linux gamers, as it allows playing Epic Games on this platform with native Proton support. However, it’s also available on Windows, making it an excellent alternative for all PC gamers.
Why Use Heroic? #

The Heroic launcher is simply better for several reasons:
- It’s fast. On my machine, when the Epic Games launcher takes 10 seconds to start, Heroic takes 2.
- More features: You can, for example, add downloaded games to the Steam library, manage cloud saves, choose not to update games, etc.
- User interface: The Heroic launcher focuses on the only element a launcher should have: games. The interface focuses on the game list, and you can launch them directly from this list. Small bonus: it’s controller-compatible.
- Multi-service: You can also connect your GOG and Amazon Prime Gaming accounts, and manage games from these platforms through Heroic.
- Open-source: Always a significant plus, the source code is available on GitHub
You can download the Heroic launcher from its official website: https://heroicgameslauncher.com/.
